In the images that make up this exhibition– curated by Irene Alison and Paolo Cagnacci – shown at Rifugio Digitale, Hayley Eichenbaum combines natural and artificial, true and false, with seductive ambiguity, transforming the reality of the archetype that feeds every fantasy about America: from the science fictions movies of the Sixties to the great American melodramas of the Fifties, and the literary epics on the road. Travelling back and forth countless times on legendary Route 66 – and sharing her photos with the many followers of her Instagram account @inter_disciplinary – the American visual artist (whose training ranges from 3D graphics to sculpture, passing through performance art) has constructed a story made of geometric patterns and colors, a declaration of her love for the road that, more than any other, characterizes the history and identity of America. Cleaning her scenes of any extraneous noise, in timeless settings, her pictures project an aura of mystery on minimalist architecture. Eichenbaum makes the ordinary surreal, offering us the technical redepiction of the frontier myth.

Hayley Eichenbaum is an interdisciplinary artist and director who works between San Francisco and Los Angeles, CA. Her early performative and kinetic work analyzes society’s expectations of women throughout the Western world, in particular how women are supposed to care about and preserve their looks. Her current digital photography work expands on the concept of appearance. Here the focus shifts to buildings and the built landscape, with particular attention to what remains of the American Southwest, where a fine façade becomes crucial to society’s very survival.
